World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is a global campaign to highlight the abuse of older people. Elder abuse comes in many forms including physical, emotional, sexual and financial abuse and also neglect. Older people are especially vulnerable to abuse as they may be unable to defend themselves or seek help as fear and or infirmity may be a barrier to getting help. Recognising and challenging the abuse of older people can also be difficult when they are isolated, and some older people are abused in institutions where their abuse may go undetected or be covered up.
This year’s theme is ‘Growing the conversation’ which is a powerful call to action. We are being asked to speak up, listen and challenge the silence that surrounds the abuse, harm, exploitation and neglect of older people. You can help by:
Starting the conversation — talk to friends, family, and colleagues about the abuse of older people.
Challenging stereotypes — call out ageism when you see or hear it.
Knowing the signs — economic, physical, emotional, sexual abuse and neglect can all have clear signs.
Supporting survivors — believe and empower older people to speak out.
