The 30th July is the annual World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, which aims to raise awareness, encourage action and promote the protection of victims.

Human trafficking exploits men, women, and children for numerous purposes including forced labour and sex, for no reward.  Many victims are misled to believe that they are being taken to work that will make their family better off, or are taken by force or kidnapped. Trafficked people lose their rights and have their identity documents taken away from them.  Victims are often taken to unfamiliar countries where they don’t know the language and so have no way of getting help.

The theme this year is, ‘Human Trafficking is organised crime – End the exploitation.’  This emphasises the connection between human trafficking and organised criminal networks, and highlights the need to address the root causes of trafficking and strengthen criminal justice responses.

Ways you can get involved:

-Educate yourself and others by learning about the signs that someone may be a victim of trafficking: https://www.unseenuk.org/about-modern-slavery/spot-the-signs/

-Support anti-trafficking organisations by volunteering your time, donating, or sharing their messages on social media.

-Participate in local events like training and workshops or support online campaigns.

-Advocate for changes in policy to protect people from becoming victims of trafficking.
