Safeguarding

Caring for those in our care

Safeguarding Statement from the Diocesan Administrator

As the Diocesan Administrator of the Diocese of Plymouth, I want to emphasise both my personal commitment and the commitment of the Diocese to creating and sustaining a culture of safeguarding across the whole of our mission.

As a community committed to following Christ and proclaiming his love, safeguarding is at the heart of all we do. We are committed to creating a safe, respectful, and secure environment for all individuals under our care and involved with our activities.

Our zero-tolerance approach means that any form of abuse, harassment, exploitation, or neglect will not be tolerated under any circumstances. This policy applies to all clergy, employees, volunteers, contractors, and anyone else we work with or who may come into contact with the Diocese.

Core Principles

  • The safety and well-being of children, young people, and vulnerable adults are our highest priorities. We will take all necessary steps to protect them from harm.
  • In line with the national standards set out by the Catholic Bishop’s Conference in England and Wales we promote a culture of vigilance and awareness where safeguarding concerns are promptly identified and addressed. Regular training and education on safeguarding practices are mandatory for all members of our organisation.
  • We have established clear and accessible reporting mechanisms to ensure that any concerns or incidents can be reported swiftly and confidentially. All reports will be taken seriously and acted upon promptly by professional staff working in conjuncture with both statutory and non-statutory partners.
  • We will respond appropriately to all allegations or concerns regarding safeguarding matters and ensure that these are impartially investigated.
  • We are committed to maintaining accountability and transparency in all safeguarding matters, working to the standards set out by the Catholic Church in England and Wales.
  • We will provide appropriate support and assistance to individuals who have been affected by abuse or safeguarding concerns regardless of where and who was responsible for that abuse.

Any individual found to be in breach of our safeguarding policies will face disciplinary action, which may include termination of employment or engagement with our organisation and reporting to relevant authorities where necessary.

Commitment to Improvement

We are dedicated to continually improving our safeguarding practices. Feedback from our community, regular training, and staying informed about best practices in safeguarding will help us achieve this goal.
