‘Outside the city’ Documentary
The monks of Mt St Bernard Abbey are a community of 25 men, half of them over 80 years old. This beautifully filmed documentary follows the monks as they move from dairy farming to brewing as they attempt to open the first Trappist brewery in the UK. The stakes are high, if their historic counter-cultural lifestyle is to survive, the venture must succeed. Meanwhile as the monks reflect on spirituality, ageing and the approaching end of life, the number of burials in the Abbey graveyard continues to grow. Director Nick Hamer spent a year with the monks, gaining privileged access to document their hidden lives. They have turned their backs on the material, consumer society, to focus instead on contemplative spirituality, and to maintain an age-old religious tradition.
The good news is The Barn Cinema at Dartington Hall will be showing the film on Friday December 13th at 8pm. with Q&A after with the films Director, Nick Hamer.
