The first diocesan Community Sponsorship application has been submitted to the Home Office to resettle a refugee family in Sidmouth. It is hoped that the family will arrive around Easter.
Exeter and Poole have formed their own Community Sponsorship Groups to start working on their applications. Exeter brings together the churches of the Sacred Heart and the Blessed Sacrament and Poole brings together St Mary’s and St Anthony of Padua. Poole are considering repurposing their presbytery as accommodation for the resettled family.
If any parishes are interested in Community Sponsorship there is a lot of support available from Caritas Plymouth. Templates for most of the documents required by the Home Office are available and the diocese can act as the Lead Sponsor taking forward the financial and legal responsibilities for the parish. Sidmouth have found it very worthwhile, attracting a lot of volunteers to the Church and taking forward the Mission of the Church.

Bishop Nicholas Celebrates First Public Mass at Plymouth Cathedral

In his first public Mass as Bishop of Plymouth at the Cathedral Church of St Mary & St Boniface, on Advent Sunday 30th November 2025, the Right Reverend Nicholas Hudson called for prayers for peace in the land of Jesus’s birth, and for all those places where there is strife and suffering, particularly South Sudan and Ukraine. The bishop also urged the congregation to pray for themselves during Advent, for those nearest and dearest to them and for all those who find themselves in real need.
