Bishop Nicholas visited St Mary, Star of the Sea, Hugh, on the Isles of Scilly over the weekend 25th to 26th July 2026. There he was welcomed by Ms Gail Sibley, pictured above and below; and four other parishioners.
Their numbers were swelled by some thirty visitors from across the United Kingdom, Spain and France. Two French families had sailed from home across the Celtic Sea to St Mary’s Island. Preaching on ‘the pearl of great price’, Bishop Nicholas urged the congregation to recall the heroic generosity of St Maximilian Kolbe; and pray for the grace to respond as instantaneously as St Maximilian did when he realised he was being called to sacrifice everything for his fellow-prisoner.
‘We had the loveliest of Masses,’ said Bishop Nicholas. ‘The joy at being able to celebrate Eucharist again after a long time was palpable. We must encourage more priests to come and enjoy the welcome waiting to be extended to them by parishioners and visitors alike; find a way to make Mass more frequent here at the westernmost tip of the Diocese’.
