WITH GUEST SPEAKER DAVID MCGLOUGHLIN

David is the Emeritus Fellow of Christian Theology at Birmingham Newman University. He has enjoyed teaching theology nationally and internationally for the last 45 years, training and resourcing Christian activists and ministers. He is a former President of the Catholic Theological Association of Great Britain.
Through his talks David McLoughlin will help us read the signs of the times of today, whilst contemplating Pope Leo XIV’s inspirational message for the 9th World Day of the Poor and consider how are we called to fight poverty, both globally and locally.
Coming soon after Pope Leo XIV apostolic exhortation Dilexi Te on love for the poor, the ninth World Day of the Poor falls on Sunday, 16 November 2025. This arrives in time to help the Church to reflect and respond to the message of the Holy Father and indeed the Church’s constant traditional of love for the poorest of our sisters and brothers.
Drawing inspiration from the lived experiences of people living in poverty, Pope Leo says in his first message for the World Day of the Poor, “The celebration of the World Day of the Poor is meant to remind our communities that the poor are at the heart of all our pastoral activity. Helping the poor is a matter of justice before a question of charity. As Saint Augustine observed: ‘You give bread to a hungry person; but it would be better if none were hungry, so that you would have no need to give it away.’ ” Join us in responding to the Holy Father’s call and his deep hope for our sisters and brothers that the Jubilee Year will inspire responses to both enduring and emerging forms of poverty.
