CAFOD launches emergency appeal for Haiti earthquake relief

Following the devastating earthquake in Caribbean Island of Haiti on 12 January 2010, CAFOD has launched an appeal to raise much needed funds. As a member of the Caritas Federation, CAFOD has immediately pledged £100,000 to their Caritas partners to assist with the relief effort. CAFOD is appealing to individuals and to parishes in the Plymouth Diocese and across England and Wales to give their generous support to this urgent appeal. The money raised will help CAFOD's partners supply water, food, medicines and shelter to people in the worst affected areas and help people to rebuild their lives in the long term. Your prayers for the people of Haiti are also sought.

The earthquake was so strong that it destroyed many buildings including the cathedral, the National Palace and the UN headquarters, as well as hundreds of thousands of homes. It is believed that tens of thousands of people have died including the Archbishop of Port-au-Prince, Monsignor Joseph Serge Miot.

CAFOD is in a strong position to respond on the ground in Haiti through their church partners, including Caritas Haiti who are assessing the situation and finding out what is most needed. Because the earthquake has been so destructive, most of the roads are impassable so CAFOD's partners are travelling by motorbike or on foot to reach the most vulnerable people.

Prayer for the people of Haiti

Light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it. (John 1:5)

At this time of darkness for the people of Haiti,
we remember all those who have died in the earthquake,
and the thousands who are injured, homeless or afraid.
God, in your love and compassion, you are with us always.

You understand the devastation of bereavement,
may your spirit comfort those who mourn.
God, in your love and compassion, you are with us always.

You are a light that shines in the darkest times,
guide, support and strengthen all those in need.
God, in your love and compassion, you are with us always.

We ask this in the name of Christ your son,
who became flesh and lived among us.    Amen.
