Bishop Christopher writes
"We had over 200 people on our Diocesan Pilgrimage this year. It was much blessed and, as promised, we prayed for everyone in the diocese while there. I would like to thank the many people who work to make the pilgrimage possible, especially Sue our Director.
"One very important aspect is the generosity of a growing number of people who act as companions to those who are sick, disabled or elderly. In my view, this is a sign of real blessing on the group and indeed on the diocese.
"As you know, our pilgrimage goes to Lourdes during the last week of May, to coincide with the Spring Bank Holiday. Next year's dates are 23-30 May.
"In 2008 we have a happy coincidence of anniversaries. It is 150 years since Our Lady appeared to Bernadette and since the building and dedication of our Cathedral. The Cathedral anniversary is being marked by a series of events in the Diocese and I would like to make our Lourdes pilgrimage an important part of those celebrations. May I encourage you to come with us on pilgrimage, perhaps in parish groups.
"There is a great sense of community on our pilgrimage together. We largely stay in one hotel. We have a fine group of young people and also older volunteers who care for our sick and disabled pilgrims, but more are always needed. Some of our young people would be greatly encouraged by help from parishes in fund-raising. I realise that some will already be committed to raising funds for the World Youth Day. But there may be others, young and old, who just need a bit of encouragement to come.
"We go to Lourdes to be the Diocese of Plymouth in Mary's place, and our main task is to pray for all who belong to this corner of the Lord's vineyard. Let us make our 2008 pilgrimage a worthy remembrance of Bernadette's vision and the dedication of our Cathedral Church."
